Let today be the day you let go of the hurts and pains you have experienced, from that person who wronged you. They did you wrong and you really didn't deserve it from them. The thing is they were hurt and they themselves didn't know how to be released from their personal conflicts with others. Now you are thrown into the saga of hurt and pain carried on from the past life of someone. A past that has yet to be put to rest, don't allow yourself to be caught in its wake and in its tail.
The only way to be free is to forgive them for they didn't know what they were doing. Actually, I never thought that forgiveness was like giving the other person the benefit of the doubt, no doubt their actions meant that in the long run, it was going to be a disaster, but they for the most part never fully grasped the full extent of their actions. There is where you have no other choice but to forgive them for what they have done. Jesus while on the cross prayed to his father and asked father God to forgive the people because they knew not what they do. You may say they knew exactly what they were doing but there was no way they really knew. They didn't know the future because they were never meant to. If they knew what God was doing through the death of his son on the cross, they would not have crucified him. If they knew God's plan for your life they would have acted differently towards you, if they were meant to be with you on the journey and path God was paving for you, they would not have done what they did to you.
God has a plan for your life and he does not ask permission of your persecutes before he sets you on the journey he has so wisely crafted. Even the ones who hurt us are part of God's planned strategy of bringing you to where he has purposed for your life, so forgive them for they know not what they are doing. You have to consider that if they really knew, they would not have hurt you the way they did and you have to forgive them for that. Unless you forgive men their trespasses against you neither will your heavenly Father forgive you of your trespasses. It's like a roadblock to your progress, each driver has to give way in order to release the jam. To forgive is like giving way to the other driver. Give and it shall be given unto you, good measure pressed down and running over shall men give into your bosom. Forgive and you shall be forgiven, give way and you will have a clear path.
God is working in each person's life, some are being invited to receive mercy and some are being invited to show mercy in order to receive because each person has a destiny. Each person has a God-given purpose and God is moving and stirring in their lives to bring them to him so they can find the purpose he has ordained for them.
