I do believe that the mark of the beast will be a thing passed through law as swiftly and same sex marriage. It will be just like the insurance requirement to being a citizen. Just as national security requirements for every citizen to be marked and registered. It is type of ownership and will be the ultimate status of a citizen with benefits on an unprecedented level. It will be the greatest economic deal ever made. But it will also be in spiritual terms a one way ticket to the lake of fire.
